Because Sometimes It’s Just a Monday
It seems like every time I come back after a break from writing I want to start with “Sorry for the absence it’s been a rough week.” The thing is, life is rough whether I’ve been writing or not. And I’m sure that it’s not just us, everyone has rough days, weeks, or years. And while I noticed that I’ve been sighing a lot over the past few days (not a good sign) I have also noticed that I’m not yelling as much. I enjoyed teaching Elly how to sew buttons, and she helped me with Minimus’ costume. And when the Dudes start screaming that they hate me I’m offering hugs instead of yelling back or sending them to their room. I kinda feel like I’m on a two steps forward one step back curve right now.
Halloween has come and gone. I’ve gone a little overboard this year by making the older seven kids costumes. Without patterns. Well, that’s not entirely true, I very heavily modified this pattern for Maximus’ costume. However, I was working so hard on it that I forgot to get the progression pictures for a separate post. I managed to get the older four costumes done in time for one of the area’s biggest Trunk or Treat’s. The challenge with the older four is that they have to pick book characters for the school parade (I’m not making multiple costumes for each child). I still haven’t finished the Dudes’ costumes, but I might not. They don’t really need them.
Now that I’m giving myself a break from sewing I’m writing a little. I’m tempted to do NaNo again this year, but I don’t have a full length story idea. And I don’t have 5000 short stories worth 10,000 words each. I love the fun and the challenge of NaNo, and the satisfaction of winning lasts for years. Maybe I’ll try again when I don’t have toddlers, it would be interesting to see how I write when I’m not depressed. I’ve always done NaNo to help with the post-partum depression, but this year I’ve got that under control.
Anyway, not where I was going with that. Maximus came to me with an idea for a tabletop RPG. He thought it would be interesting to have a story about a pirate dragon, who had a peg leg and a claw hand. I was taken with it, and spent most of Sunday drawing a map and coming up with plot and character ideas. It’s started to take on a life of it’s own, and it’s not going to be what Maximus thought at all. This one is going to be more complex than the other stories I’ve written for our games; in the past I’ve written 20 minute single-adventure games. This time it’s going to be an actual campaign. I’ve got 5 adventures, a good variety of villains, and a really good plot twist. I should probably add a booby trap somewhere, but we’ll see how the writing goes.
Little Poppy figured out how to get on her hands and knees. Look out world, if the Dudes ever leave her alone long enough, here she comes! She’s also teething. So she’s back to waking up and screaming uncontrollably all night, poor baby.
The kids are pestering me to go to a park, so I’ll end now.
